It was not so long ago that mid-strength beer was often viewed in a negative light and a compromise on flavour, especially for lovers of craft beer. With very few boldly flavoured lower alcohol beer options on the shelves, finding a sessionable beer that would satisfy, wasn’t always easy – with widely available, big commercial beer brands not exactly offering a full flavoured experience.
Luckily for craft drinkers, passionate craft brewers came to the rescue with some iconic lower ABV releases. Beers like Bridge Road Brewing’s Little Bling and Pirate Life’s Throwback IPA both gained a loyal following, and were joined in more recent years by Balter’s Captain sensible.
With consumer demand driving more considered lifestyle options, these bold middy’s have become increasingly popular for a range of occasions. Whether heading to a long BBQ lunch with friends or just relaxing on the couch watching the game, you are now spoilt for choice when looking to enjoy a frothy without going overboard on the booze.
Here are some of our top picks:
Wayward Hazy Mid
Released at the end of 2020 and picking up a gold at the 2021 AIBA awards, this new kid on the block is an easy drinking hazy pale ale and is perfect for those looking for a sessionable middy with a seriously juicy hop punch. Light malt and oats are perfectly balanced with tropical hop flavours of Citra, Simcoe and Chinook. The perfect backyard beer.
Deeds Half time
Perfect anytime, this full flavoured middy is loaded with heaps of hop-driven citrus and light grapefruit notes thanks to the use of Vic Secret and Motueka hops, and even manages a balanced resinous bitter note, finishing crisp.
Colonial Small Ale
Brewed using the same techniques as an IPA, with a little brewers magic to bring the ABV down to that small 3.5%, Colonial Small Ale packs a punch. Plenty of pine and citrus note flood the palate and finishes with a gentle bitterness, calling you in for another sip.
